Croucher Fellow at the University of Oxford interested in photochemical hazes in exoplanets
Martha did her PhD at the University of Exeter, working with Nathan, Denis and Eric in constraining the effect of photochemical hazes on the climate of Early Earth (Mak+2023) and tidally-locked planet (Mak+2024). She showed that haze can help regulate the climate and make the planet more habitable. She further studied the effect of hazes on the observability of hot-Jupiters, suggesting that the presence of haze could be diagnose through limb asymmetry (Mak+2025). She is currently a Croucher Fellow at the University of Oxford, where she works with Thaddeus Komacek to use analytical theory to constrain the presence of haze and its particle size distribution across different longitudes (Mak+2026). She also investigates the effects of hazes on exoplanet atmospheric chemistry and explores how hazes influence a wide range of observational techniques used to characterize exoplanet atmospheres.
